Definition
A moose exclosure is a fenced-off section of forest that keeps moose out, used to compare how vegetation grows with and without moose browsing.
Why it matters
Moose are not native to Newfoundland — they were introduced in the early 1900s and have no natural predators on the island, so the population is unusually dense for the available habitat. That means heavy browsing pressure on young trees and undergrowth across the park. Exclosures give visitors a direct, visible comparison: taller, denser undergrowth inside the fence, more heavily browsed vegetation outside it.
