Rocky Harbour is about 72 kilometres from Deer Lake. The drive is a single road — Route 430, the Viking Trail — and takes around an hour in normal conditions. Deer Lake Regional Airport (YDF) is the usual way in. There is no bus into the park that you can plan a trip around. You need a car.

Times assume daylight, dry pavement and no construction. Fog, moose and road work are normal reasons to add 15–20 minutes.
From Deer Lake Airport
YDF is a small airport. After you land:
- Collect bags and walk to the rental desks in the terminal. Hertz, Avis, Budget, National and Enterprise are the names that usually show up on-site. Confirm the desk is open for your flight before you book a late arrival.
- Leave the airport and follow signs toward the Trans-Canada Highway.
- Take Exit 16 for Route 430 / Viking Trail.
- Stay on Route 430 north. Wiltondale is the turnoff for the south side of the park. Keep going if Rocky Harbour is the destination.
- The town sits on the harbour just off 430. You will see services, lodging and the Parks Canada visitor centre in this stretch.
That is the whole route. You cannot get lost in the usual sense. You can, however, arrive tired and then try to squeeze a boat tour into the same afternoon. That is how people miss the dock time.

Same day as Western Brook Pond?
Landing at YDF and doing the boat tour that afternoon is a poor plan for most flights. You still have the rental desk, an hour of driving, the 27 km run north from town, a 3 km walk to the dock, and a two-hour cruise. BonTours also wants golf-cart users in the lot 90 minutes early. From the Port aux Basques ferry
The Marine Atlantic crossing from North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Port aux Basques takes about six hours. After you roll off, you still have several hours of driving north — budget four to five hours to the Deer Lake area, then continue on Route 430. This is a travel day, not a hike day. Eat and fuel when you can. Services thin out between towns.
Once you are on Route 430
430 is the only road connecting Deer Lake to Rocky Harbour and the north side of Gros Morne. Wiltondale is where Route 431 peels off toward Woody Point, the Tablelands and Trout River. There is no bridge across Bonne Bay. If the south side is on the itinerary, give it its own day. The south-side guide covers that split.

What the drive feels like
- Fill up in Deer Lake or Rocky Harbour. Do not assume every pull-off has fuel.
- Moose use this road, especially at dusk. Slow down when the light goes flat.
- The road bends enough that “72 km, one hour” is the honest average, not a guarantee.
- There is no transit backup if the rental falls through.
